It is DirecTV’s final year as the exclusive home of NFL Sunday Ticket, the out-of-market sports package that broadcasts National Football League regular season games, and let’s just say opening weekend isn’t off to a great start. Reports of the Sunday Ticket website and app crashing were rampant yesterday as customers were either locked out of the service, unable to sign in, experienced laggy feeds or received error messages that claimed they couldn’t stream because they were inside an NFL stadium when they weren’t. DirecTV told TechCrunch, “We recognize we missed an opportunity to deliver for a small number of…
Online marketplace eBay is further investing in its sneaker business with today’s news that it’s acquiring Sneaker Con Digital’s authentication business, which verifies the authenticity of high-value footwear. The business has operations in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, and Germany, and had been previously working with eBay to vet the sneakers being bought and sold on its platform. Sneakers have become a large category on eBay’s marketplace, where today there are over 1.9 million pairs available to buy every day. In October 2020, eBay launched an “Authenticity Guarantee” service in partnership with Sneaker Con, whose team of experts would verify…
Instagram is bringing back support for Twitter Card previews starting today. Now when users share an Instagram link on Twitter, a preview of the post will be shown in the tweet. Prior to this change, when users posted an Instagram link on Twitter, the tweet would only display the URL of the Instagram link. The social media platform made the controversial decision to remove Twitter Card support back in 2012. At the time, Instagram founder Kevin Systrom said the reason was that Instagram wanted to take control of its content and that the company wanted images to be viewed on…
Apple is launching not one, but two premium smartphones today, and the iPhone 6 Plus is the one many probably were skeptical even existed just a few short months ago. With a screen size measuring 5.5-inches across the diagonal, it’s well into the territory labeled “phablet” on the ancient sea charts of mariners who’ve braved the Android waters. However, Apple’s version of a smartphone that strains the inclusion of “phone” in any word describing it might surprise even those dead set against the trend toward ever-bigger mobile screens. Video Review Basics 5.5-inch, 1920 x 1080 display, 401 ppi with 1300:1…
Back in 2020 I covered how the U.K. startup YardLink — which allows construction companies to obtain critical equipment faster than normal equipment rental companies — had raised its seed round. It was basically bringing a digital-first, marketplace approach to an industry normally hide-bound by a slow, centralized hire market. Two years later, and YardLink is back with a $17.5 million Series A funding round led by Beringea, with participation from Amplifier and existing investors Speedinvest and FJ Labs. From its rental roots, the company has now matured into a full-service supply chain management platform, meaning contractors get access to…
PayPal announced today the launch of its first fully branded cash loading card, called the PayPal My Cash Card, which will allow users to load up their PayPal accounts using cash instead of bank transfers. The card will be sold at pharmacies and discount stores, including CVS, Rite Aid, Fred’s, Dollar General, Family Dollar, and others soon. The company says that the PayPal Cash Card will be available beginning today, at 30,000 locations across the U.S., 10,000 of which are Dollar Generals. PayPal plans for the card to reach 60,000 retailers by 2013. To activate a card, users first purchase…
The product line will be housed under a new business unit called GM Energy and covers the gamut of EV ownership, including stationary energy storage, solar through a partnership with SunPower and bi-directional charging technology to deliver power from the vehicle to their home or to the grid. GM Energy has also developed a cloud product that houses data and management software and helps tie all of these hardware products together and, ultimately, balance out the power grid while providing an incentive to EV owners. The new business unit has also developed large-scale batteries for utilities as well as hydrogen…
Amid a growing number of banking apps aimed at teens, Square Inc.’s Cash App today is broadening its reach by making its payments app available to younger teens between the ages of 13 and 17. Previously, the app required users to be at least 18 years old, like rival Venmo. The company says younger teens will need to get a parent or guardian to authorize their account, but can then begin to send peer-to-peer payments and take delivery of a customized Cash Card, powered by Visa. The Cash Card, essentially a Visa debit card tied to the teen’s Cash App…
Fisker provided an upbeat forecast on the ramp-up of its electric automaking business during Wednesday’s third-quarter earnings call, highlighting its manufacturing partnership with Foxconn, a battery supply agreement with Chinese battery giant CATL secured and its on-track production for the company’s debut Ocean SUV. The company confirmed that it will start production of the Ocean in November 2022, in partnership with automotive contract manufacturer Magna Steyr, and will produce two vehicles a day by the first quarter of next year, CEO Henrik Fisker said during an investor call Wednesday. Deliveries are on track to begin in the U.S. and Europe…
Meet Pixpay, a French startup that wants to replace cash when you’re handing out pocket money to your kids. Anybody who is older than 10 years old can create a Pixpay account, get a debit card and manage pocket money. Challenger banks are nothing new, but they’re still mostly targeted towards adults. If you want to create an N26 or Revolut account, you need to be at least 18 years old. You can create a Lydia account if you’re at least 14 years old with parental consent. Pixpay, like Kard, wants to fill that gap and offer modern payment methods…
