Digital Skills of the Future: What Kids Need to Be Able to Do Online

Modern children are digital natives, a generation that has been familiar with technology since infancy. Today’s kids often know how to use a touchscreen before they can turn the pages of a book. And when they get older, they understand how to play at cookiecasino.com/en-CA in seconds. There is nothing wrong with that: digital tools are no worse for learning than the usual “analog” things.

Moreover, this close exposure to technology will make it easier for children to adapt to the world of the future, where skills that we were often not taught in school will be in demand. Let’s take a look at a few ways to help your child embrace the digital world from an early age.

    Information Security

The first and most important thing a child should know about technology is the basic rules of digital hygiene and behavior in the online environment. Explain to him what information you can and can’t share on the Web, why it’s unsafe to follow suspicious links, teach him the importance of politeness in social networks and messengers, and be sure to install antivirus and parental control apps on all gadgets. This way you can be aware of what sites your children are visiting, limit their access to inappropriate content, and set the amount of time they can spend on the Web and playing games. You can start by introducing your child to digital safety in a simple game form, and then gradually move on to more comprehensive rules of safe behavior on the Web.

    Coding

Basic programming skills have long been a necessity not only for professional IT people. Nowadays coding skills come in handy for entrepreneurs, editors, scientists, and people of many other professions.

But this doesn’t mean that you should rush to send your school child to Python courses. At the initial stage, to teach a child to “think like a programmer” is easiest with the help of games – fortunately there are more than enough of them. Many of them, such as Lightbot Jr., Kodable, or Bee-Bots are suitable even for preschoolers. Older kids will like the more complex ones – Codecombat, SpaceChem, and Cargo-Bot.

Such game mechanics will help develop the child’s ability to solve problems with algorithms and think logically. In a few years, new programming languages will appear, but these basic skills will remain relevant.

    Content Creation

The Internet is first of all content. Without it, websites and apps will be just empty shells. It isn’t surprising that content creation is one of the most demanded skills in today’s world, and, by all appearances, it will remain so in the future.

Most children themselves want to be involved in creating videos or creative content in other formats: it isn’t for nothing that their idols are popular bloggers and Influencers. All you have to do is give them the right tool (any smartphone will do for starters) and tell them where they can safely share their creations.
