A fireplace, to me, gives a welcome home cozy factor like nothing else. Imagine my delight when Woodgrain volunteered to fund this project! I’ve always liked Woodgrain trims and have used them in a few previous projects. What To Look For When Buying An Electric Fireplace Insert
.0326 = are available in a range of sizes ranging from around 23′′ to 50′′ broad. This 30″ fireplace was my choice. Choose a size that will look well in your space and will suit the DIY fireplace surround you’re making. Most mid-priced electric fireplace inserts are LED-lit, remote-controlled, and have both a flame-only and a flame-and-heat setting.
That’s ideal for us Floridians, who only require heat about three times a year! Before deciding on one, make sure to go through all of the options. I fell in love with one particular brand of electric fireplace insert, and shortly before I got it, I read that it projected the heat and flame settings on the fireplace glass when it was switched on all the time. Oh, how distracting!
How Do You Connect An Electric Fireplace Insert?
Electric fireplace inserts require only a standard household electrical socket to function. What you’ll need to do is install an electrical outlet within your faux fireplace frame. I had an electrician install an additional socket on the wall where I was installing my DIY fireplace, which you can see below. Allow me to assist you in avoiding a false fireplace blunder. If you’re going to install an outlet, make sure it’s in the center and away from the frame’s edge. Mine wasn’t in the frame area far enough, so I had to chop off a piece of my frame to fit the fireplace electrical socket into the outlet.

Best of all, this craftsman-style fireplace is simple to construct, making it an excellent project for an experienced carpenter or home renovation enthusiast like me. It’s all flat cuts, and there aren’t any complicated double-angle cuts as with crown molding. Simple as that!
If you want to create a classic fireplace, follow the instructions for covering the surround with plywood. Finish it in your unique way by cutting it out differently. One piece of advice: anticipate ahead of time where your plywood seams will be so that you can cover all bare wood edges with trim.
As I mentioned in the video, I prefer to label my wood as I cut it with the size, piece name, and position of where I’ll put my pocket holes. Mark the front and rear sides of the plywood as well, so you always utilize the best side out. It’s inconvenient to return to the store after you’ve grabbed and cut the wrong piece!
